Dr. Farid Amirouche
University of Illinois Chicago, USA
Title: When “Successful” Surgery Is Not Enough: The Biomechanics Behind Orthopaedic Failure
Dr. Farid Amirouche is Professor and Director of Orthopaedic Research at the University of Illinois Chicago and Director of Biomechanics at the NorthShore Orthopaedic Research Institute. He is also a Senior Research Scientist at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. His research focuses on orthopaedic biomechanics, including knee, hip, and spine biomechanics, joint kinematics, bone-implant interactions, and experimental and finite element modeling. Dr. Amirouche has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed publications, published seven books, holds several patents, and has mentored more than 30 PhD students. His research has received support from agencies including the NIH, NSF, NASA, NIOSH, and the U.S. Air Force, as well as major orthopaedic industry partners.
Prof. Alaaeldin Azmi Ahmad
Palestine Polytechnic University, Palestine
Title: A new vision in management of growing spine: From millimeters to meaning
I am a pediatric orthopedic surgeon from Palestine and a professor of orthopedic surgery at Palestine Polytechnic University. I also served as an adjunct professor at the Medical University of South Carolina and the University of Toledo in Ohio, USA. With more than 28 years of experience as pediatric orthopedic surgeon, my clinical and research interests focus on pediatric spinal surgery and clubfoot management, especially early-onset scoliosis, minimally invasive techniques for pediatric spine deformity, and the accelerated Ponseti technique. I have published 35 papers and 10 book chapters on these topics in international peer-reviewed journals and books, and I am co-editor of Early-Onset Scoliosis: Guidelines for Management in Resource-Limited Settings (Taylor & Francis).

I am also active in global surgery, overseeing and participating in clinical programs focused on education and training across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. My work with global organizations includes committee and program participation with SRS, SICOT, AO Spine, NASS, Eurospine, and the Pan Arab Spine Society.

Over the past 15 years, I have developed Active Apex Correction (APC), a novel technique for the surgical management of early-onset scoliosis. APC has proven reliable, accessible, and affordable in both developed and developing countries.

The technique is now used by surgical teams in more than 22 countries, with positive outcomes reported in 11 peer-reviewed papers published in journals such as Global Spine Journal, European Spine Journal, and Asian Spine Journal. Large multicenter studies are also being planned.

I also developed a one-week accelerated Ponseti technique for idiopathic clubfoot, completing Ponseti casting within one week instead of the traditional six weeks. This approach helps clubfoot missions complete treatment within limited timeframes and improves access for families who must travel long distances and stay away from home for care. Two papers on the procedure have been published in the European Journal of Foot and Ankle, and the technique is gaining popularity in several countries, including Egypt, and India.

My work with SICOT includes:
Chair, Spine Subspecialty Committee, 2020–2022
Chair, Advocacy Committee, 2022–2024
President, World Orthopaedic Concern (WOC), the humanitarian arm of SICOT, 2020–2022
Editorial board member in SICOT J

Research and editorial roles:
- Clinical consultant for research with the Biomedical Engineering Department at the University of Toledo, Ohio, on the new APC surgical technique for early-onset scoliosis.
- Editorial board member, Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics B and SICOT-J.
- Reviewer board member, The Spine Journal, SICOT-J, Global Spine Journal, Clinical Neuroscience, and European Spine Journal.
Dr. Henrique Pereira Neiva
University of Beira Interior (UBI), Portugal
Title: The Underestimated Role of Warm-Up: From Performance Enhancement to Its Influence on Exercise Outcomes
Henrique Pereira Neiva is an Associate Professor with Habilitation in Sport Sciences at the University of Beira Interior (UBI), Portugal, where he also serves as Pro-Rector for Sport and Healthy Campus. He is a senior researcher at the Research Center in Sports Sciences, Health Sciences and Human Development (CIDESD). His research focuses on exercise physiology, strength and conditioning, warm-up and re-warm-up strategies, aquatic sports, and the optimization of exercise and training responses. Professor Neiva has authored numerous scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals and has coordinated and collaborated in several national and international research projects. A substantial part of his research has examined how preparatory exercise, particularly warm-up characteristics and post-warm-up recovery, can influence physiological responses, subsequent performance, and the effectiveness of exercise interventions. His work aims to translate scientific evidence into more effective training and exercise practices across sport, performance, and health contexts.
